Delta: Commissioner, police orderly accused of beating ministry’s Deputy Director to death

Tension has reportedly gripped the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education in Asaba following the death of a senior official after an altercation on the ministry’s premises.

According to SaharaReporters, the deceased, identified as Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the ministry, allegedly died after he was assaulted during a confrontation involving Commissioner for Secondary Education, Kingsley Ashibogwu, his police orderly and driver.

A family member and a ministry staff member, who spoke anonymously, alleged that Adeda was beaten, fell into a coma and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, before later dying. His remains were reportedly deposited at Asaba Specialist Hospital mortuary.

The staff member alleged that the incident followed a disagreement between Adeda and the Director of Examinations, who reportedly contacted the commissioner.

However, Ashibogwu denied ordering or participating in any assault. He claimed he was summoned after receiving a distress call that Adeda was threatening staff and became violent when he arrived.

“I never ordered anybody to attack or beat him,” the commissioner said.

SaharaReporters said the conflicting accounts could not be independently verified, while messages to the Delta State Police spokesperson seeking confirmation were unanswered.
