Liverpool bring Julian Ward back as sporting director after Richard Hughes exit

Liverpool have confirmed the return of Julian Ward as the club’s new sporting director, replacing Richard Hughes following his departure for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. According to The Daily Mirror, Ward returns to Anfield after previously occupying the role during the 2022-23 season and subsequently working as a technical director for Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group.

The 45-year-old originally joined Liverpool in 2012 after leaving Manchester City and worked his way through several football operations roles before succeeding Michael Edwards as sporting director. Ward was involved in the recruitment of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, while also helping complete the signing of Alexis Mac Allister. He will now work alongside head coach Andoni Iraola.
