The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, placing the Nigerian education assessment specialist at the helm of the regional examination body, Blueprint reports.

Dangut, who until recently headed WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, officially assumed the position on October 1 for an initial five-year term ending September 2031.

He takes over from Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia, becoming the 14th person to serve as Registrar to Council, following ratification by WAEC’s governing Council at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra in March 2026.

His career spans more than three decades, beginning in 1994 as a teacher at St Louis College, Jos, before joining WAEC in 1998, where he held roles including Assistant Registrar, Head of Examinations Security, and Zonal Coordinator, before rising to Deputy Registrar and Head of the Nigeria National Office.

During that tenure, from October 2023 to September 2026, he drove the expansion of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialised question papers and the Digital Electronic Marking System.

Dangut holds a PhD in Animal Science and a Master’s in Education Administration and Planning, and has served on the boards of NERDC, JAMB and JUPEB, as well as representing WAEC at the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

As Registrar and CEO, he will now oversee WAEC’s regional operations, with examination integrity, digital testing and certification expected to remain central to the Council’s work under his leadership through September 2031.
