Nigeria lose AC Milan defender Zachary Athekame after Switzerland debut

Nigeria have lost the chance to secure AC Milan defender Zachary Athekame after the 21-year-old made his senior debut for Switzerland, according to Daily Post Nigeria. The Geneva-born right-back, who is currently on loan at Lyon, featured in Switzerland’s 3-0 UEFA Nations League victory over North Macedonia and provided assists for both of Zeki Amdouni’s goals.

Athekame was eligible to represent Nigeria through his father and had reportedly been targeted by the Super Eagles. He previously represented Switzerland 17 times at Under-21 level. His senior appearance now ends Nigeria’s hopes of convincing the promising defender to switch allegiance.
