Imo CP: Drone locates kidnappers’ camp, but IEDs hinder rescue
Security operatives have located the hideout where suspected kidnappers are holding abducted National Youth Service Corps members and other victims in Imo State.
Vanguard reported that Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso said drones tracked the abductors to their location, but intelligence indicated the camp was surrounded by improvised explosive devices.
“Yesterday we were in the bush; we trailed them up to a particular location. But at that point in time, we couldn’t move in to where the coordinates showed us where they are,” Bosso said.
“But our predicament is that with the intel we have, the camp is mined with IEDs,” he added.
Bosso said security forces would deploy high-velocity vehicles, bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers to reach the victims.
The passengers were abducted after gunmen attacked two buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway on October 1.
The Defence Headquarters said 20 passengers were abducted, while 10 others, including eight prospective corps members, were rescued.
