Christa Pike: Inside the failed execution and what comes next
Christa Pike remains in critical condition after Tennessee officials failed to execute her by lethal injection, prompting the state to halt scheduled executions and launch an investigation.
According to The Washington Post, Pike, 50, was administered two doses of lethal medication on September 30 but remained alive, later requiring hospital treatment and a ventilator.
Her attorneys alleged that officials failed to follow the state’s execution protocol, while Tennessee authorities maintained that procedures were followed. The lawyers said Pike’s arms were “swollen, burned, and blistered” and accused the execution team of “deliberate indifference to her basic medical needs.”
Pike had been sentenced to death for her role in the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, who was also a teenager at the time.
The failed execution has intensified debate over capital punishment and Tennessee’s execution procedures. Gov. Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive third-party review and halted executions scheduled for the remainder of 2026.
The case also led to the resignation of Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada, who said the agency had carried out its responsibilities according to established protocol.
