What’s Christa Pike’s current condition days after her botched execution?

Christa Pike has remained unconscious and on a ventilator at a hospital in the four days since her failed execution in Tennessee, and her prognosis might not be known for days more, one of her lawyers said Sunday.

Death row inmate Christa Pike remains hospitalized in critical condition on a ventilator following a failed execution attempt at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, leaving her long-term medical prognosis uncertain, according to reporting by BBC News.

The 50-year-old, who was convicted in 1996 for a murder committed when she was 18, survived two separate doses of lethal pentobarbital on September 30. Legal counsel representing Pike stated that medical personnel are currently working to clear the lethal chemical compounds from her system while managing respiratory distress and physical injuries sustained during the prolonged procedure. Defense attorneys noted that the extent of prospective neurological or organ damage remains unclear as she remains unconscious.

When asked whether she ever regained consciousness after the execution attempt, Assistant Federal Defender Stephen Ferrell, Pike’s lawyer, said on CNN’s “State of the Union”: “Not that I am aware of.”

In response to the incident, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent third-party investigation into the execution protocols and placed a temporary moratorium on all scheduled executions across the state. Defense representatives and human rights organizations have called for a permanent halt to further execution attempts, arguing that subjecting Pike to a second procedure would constitute unconstitutional cruel and unusual punishment.
