Microsoft, other employers blocked from sponsoring foreign workers’ green cards
The administration of United States President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of Microsoft and Adobe from the H-1B visa programme over alleged abuses involving foreign workers.
According to Vanguard, Vice President JD Vance disclosed the decision on Thursday during a White House press conference, describing it as part of the administration’s crackdown on immigration-related fraud.
Vance accused Microsoft of laying off American employees while recruiting foreign workers through the programme.
“Our message to Microsoft is: you’re a great American company, but you’ve got to hire great American workers,” he said.
The vice president alleged that Microsoft dismissed 6,000 American workers while replacing them with 6,300 H-1B visa holders.
He also announced investigations into nine leading universities, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, over alleged misuse of exchange visas.
The administration claims some institutions exploit visa arrangements to recruit cheaper foreign researchers.
The announcements form part of broader immigration enforcement measures targeting alleged visa fraud.
