Hurricane Isaias hits US Gulf Coast, triggers severe flooding
Hurricane Isaias struck the United States Gulf Coast on Friday, bringing destructive winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous flooding to communities across Florida and Alabama.
According to The Associated Press, the Category 2 hurricane made landfall near Destin, Florida, with maximum sustained winds of 105mph (169km/h).
The storm flooded roads, damaged power lines and uprooted trees, prompting authorities to warn residents against unnecessary travel.
“The storm is here. Buckle down at this point. Don’t be getting out on the roads,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned.
He said flash flooding remained a major threat across the region.
Police in Pensacola urged residents to avoid roads littered with debris, while several counties temporarily suspended emergency operations.
President Donald Trump said authorities were monitoring the hurricane closely, describing the situation as “under control.”
Forecasters also warned of possible tornadoes across Florida and southern Georgia.
By early Saturday, Isaias had weakened below hurricane strength, although dangerous conditions persisted across affected communities.
The full extent of the damage remained unclear.
