Nigeria customs seizes over 1.2 tonnes of illicit drugs worth N3.67bn in imported Cars
The Nigeria Customs Service, Tin Can Island Port Command, has intercepted two 40-foot containers carrying Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies, gummies, and narcotics valued at N3.67bn, according to a report by The Punch.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Oscar Ivara, disclosed in a statement that the contraband was uncovered during joint physical examinations with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. Smugglers had concealed the illicit substances inside imported vehicles and automobile spare parts.
On September 2, 2026, officers inspected the first container and discovered “890 packs of Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, with a combined weight of 598.08 kilogrammes, alongside two used vehicles.” A second container intercepted on September 16 yielded “1,207 packages of Cannabis indica weighing 603.75 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of N3.62bn.”
In total, authorities impounded 1,201.83 kilogrammes of illicit substances across both shipments. Ivara noted that the concealment technique highlights “the determination of smugglers to exploit containerised cargo to facilitate the movement of prohibited items,” confirming the seized drugs will be formally handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation.
