Man City brace for hostile Liverpool crowd at Anfield after guilty verdict

Manchester City are preparing for a hostile reception from Liverpool supporters at Anfield on Sunday as they return to Premier League action for the first time since being found guilty of multiple financial rule breaches.

The reigning league leaders face their rivals amid growing controversy surrounding the verdict in the long-running investigation into 115 charges brought against the club.

According to BBC Sport, City are expecting an intimidating atmosphere, with Liverpool supporters likely to direct chants and criticism at the visitors following the ruling.

The Premier League confirmed that City had been found guilty of the majority of the charges, which concern alleged financial irregularities between 2009 and 2018.

However, the Manchester club continue to deny wrongdoing and have appealed against the decision, with potential sanctions yet to be determined.

City manager Enzo Maresca faces the challenge of keeping his players focused on the match despite the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future.

The fixture also comes against the backdrop of a fierce rivalry between the teams, whose supporters have frequently clashed over footballing success and financial spending.

Manchester City supporters are planning a special away-day display, with approximately 3,000 travelling fans encouraged to wear retro shirts and bring inflatable bananas.

City supporters’ club representative Kevin Parker acknowledged the atmosphere awaiting the team.

“Anfield is always a hostile atmosphere, not overly because of what has happened,” Parker told BBC Sport.

“Their fans will be singing songs and chanting things but that doesn’t bother us. We have faced it before when going to Anfield.”

Meanwhile, striker Erling Haaland has urged City’s players and supporters to remain united following the verdict.

The match presents City with an immediate test of their ability to maintain their league campaign while the appeal process continues.

Possible punishments include fines, points deductions and even expulsion, although no final sanctions have been confirmed.

The appeal’s outcome remains uncertain, leaving City facing intense scrutiny both on and off the pitch.
