Liverpool remember Besian Idrizaj ahead of LASK Champions League clash
Liverpool will be reminded of Besian Idrizaj’s legacy when they face Austrian side LASK in the Champions League, recalling a promising forward who died aged 22 after suffering a cardiac arrest. According to the Liverpool Echo, Idrizaj joined Liverpool from LASK in 2005 but never made a competitive senior appearance for the club.
The Austrian forward attracted attention after scoring a hat-trick in the opening 26 minutes of Liverpool’s 3-2 pre-season victory over Wrexham in July 2007. However, he struggled to secure a first-team breakthrough and subsequently spent time on loan at Luton Town and Crystal Palace. After experiencing worrying health episodes while playing for Wacker Innsbruck, Idrizaj eventually joined Swansea City in 2009.
He made several appearances for the Welsh club before suffering a cardiac arrest in Linz on May 15, 2010. Swansea retired his No.40 shirt and honoured his memory during their promotion to the Premier League in 2011, ensuring his legacy remained part of the club’s history.
