Political tension as EFCC receives fresh petition against Atiku ahead of 2027

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has received a fresh petition seeking the prosecution of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar over alleged financial crimes dating back to 2006.

According to LEADERSHIP, former federal lawmaker Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma submitted the petition, urging the commission to revisit previous investigations involving Atiku.

The petition, dated August 27, 2026, and received September 1, referenced a 2006 EFCC report and a 2010 United States Senate investigation.

Agbonayinma subsequently visited the commission’s Abuja headquarters to adopt his petition and answer investigators’ questions.

“I want to thank Nigerians, the EFCC, and those praying for me in this struggle. The laws are meant for both the rich and the poor. After the EFCC has done a fantastic job, it should not be kept under the table,” he said.

The petition seeks renewed scrutiny of the allegations, but no fresh prosecution has been announced.

EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale had not commented on the investigation’s status when the report was published.
