Erling Haaland makes Manchester City history despite 4-2 defeat to PSG
Manchester City suffered a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday, despite Erling Haaland making club history with a second-half brace. According to the Evening Standard, the result came in City’s first home match since an independent commission found the Premier League club guilty of serious financial irregularities.
The encounter also marked Pep Guardiola’s return to the Etihad Stadium after leaving City last summer, with supporters showing their backing for the former manager. PSG appeared to be cruising towards victory after first-half goals from Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha gave the reigning European champions a commanding advantage.
However, Haaland inspired City’s response with two goals, taking his Champions League tally for the club to 38 in 41 appearances and making him their all-time leading scorer in the competition. City pushed for an equaliser during a frantic second half, hitting the woodwork twice and creating several opportunities, but PSG held firm.
Maghnes Akliouche added another goal for the visitors, while they also missed a late penalty. The defeat leaves City with work to do in the league phase, while Haaland’s record-breaking performance offered a personal highlight on a difficult night for the Premier League side.
