Senate launches investigation into corps member’s death at Enugu NYSC camp
The Senate has ordered an investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Etimbuk Daniel, at the Enugu State orientation camp, Vanguard reports. The resolution, adopted on Thursday, followed a motion sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey, who sought an urgent review of healthcare services available to corps members nationwide.
Bassey said the incident was “not isolated, but highlights a recurring pattern of systemic negligence, poor medical infrastructure, and absence of qualified emergency personnel and rapid referral protocols across NYSC camps.” He called for scrutiny of allegations of medical negligence and ineffective emergency response at orientation camps.
Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University, reportedly died at the camp following allegations that he was given fake medication and did not receive timely medical attention. The probe, to be conducted by several Senate committees with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, will establish the circumstances of his death.
