Sally Rooney’s books withdrawn from UK market over support for Palestine action.
Award-winning Irish author Sally Rooney’s books are being withdrawn from the UK after her support for Palestine Action left her publisher unable to transfer her UK royalties, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
The bestselling novelist, known for works such as Normal People and Intermezzo, pledged to donate profits from her sales to Palestine Action, a group banned as a terrorist organization by the British government. Under UK anti-terrorism legislation, facilitating or routing payments connected to a proscribed group presents severe legal restrictions.
Publisher Faber announced it would cease supplying her works across Britain in all formats. “Current legislation in the U.K. has led to circumstances where Faber cannot pass on U.K. earnings to Sally Rooney for her work. To sell a writer’s work and not be able to pass on earnings is an unconscionable situation for a publisher,” Faber stated.
Rooney, who previously described the ban as an assault on basic freedoms, accepted the publisher’s decision.
