Iran has warned that vital undersea internet cables passing through the Strait of Hormuz could become targets amid escalating tensions with the United States.

According to the Daily Express, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Brigadier General Hossein Mohebi highlighted the strategic importance of the cables.

“Seven major cables have passed under the Strait of Hormuz, all of which the world’s internet and commercial data depend on; we are reminding them of this so that the enemy knows,” Mohebi said.

He separately warned: “The world will see what will happen.”

Former IRGC commander Mohsen Rezaee also threatened regional digital infrastructure, including data centres and artificial intelligence facilities.

However, the International Cable Protection Committee previously disputed claims about the strait’s global significance.

The organisation stated that less than one percent of international internet bandwidth passes through the waterway, suggesting disruptions would primarily affect regional connectivity.

The warnings follow renewed tensions over shipping through the strategically important strait.
