I never asked Nigerians abroad to stop supporting families — Peter Obi
The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied asking Nigerians living abroad to stop sending money to their families.
According to The Sun, Obi made the clarification on Tuesday through his X account, accusing political opponents of misrepresenting his earlier remarks.
The former Anambra governor said he appreciated the sacrifices of Nigerians abroad, whose remittances help families cover essential expenses.
“I never asked them to abandon their loved ones. My concern is that Nigeria should not remain a country where millions depend on relatives abroad for basic survival,” he said.
Obi stressed that his message focused on building an economy where Nigerians could meet their needs without depending heavily on overseas relatives.
His clarification followed criticism of remarks made during a town hall meeting in Manchester, United Kingdom, where he urged Nigerians abroad to challenge poor governance.
He maintained that improved leadership and economic opportunities remained essential to reducing hardship.
