Meghan Markle learned of father’s allegations in 2018, says statement
Meghan Markle learned of “disturbing allegations” against her father, Thomas Markle Sr., in the summer of 2018, weeks after marrying Prince Harry, Page Six reports.
In a Friday statement, the Duchess of Sussex said she was shown a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection containing claims about her estranged father.
“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them,” she said.
“I trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families.”
Police in Cebu City, Philippines, are investigating Markle Sr. after child sex abuse material was allegedly found in his home. Details are confidential.
Markle Sr. denied the allegations. “I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of,” he told the Daily Mail.
