2027: INEC breaks silence on alleged AI-generated photographs on voter register
The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun investigating suspected AI-generated photographs appearing in its preliminary voters’ register ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Daily Post, concerns emerged after suspicious photographs were identified in entries from a polling unit in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee Chairman, Mohammed Haruna, said the register published online on October 26 was preliminary and remained subject to verification and correction.
“The Commission is also examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings,” Haruna said.
INEC explained that questionable records had already been identified during the physical display conducted nationwide from October 9 to 15.
The commission stressed that the published register was not final and said verification, adjudication and data-cleanup processes would continue before certification.
INEC said the final Register of Voters would be certified on December 15, 2026.
