West Ham sack Nuno Espírito Santo 13 games into Championship season
West Ham United have sacked head coach Nuno Espírito Santo just 13 games into the new EFL Championship season.
The 52-year-old Portuguese manager was appointed in September last year in an effort to stave off relegation, but was unable to prevent the Hammers from slipping out of the Premier League for the first time since 2012.
Despite retaining his position over the summer, back-to-back home defeats against Southampton and West Brom left the club eighth in the table, prompting board action.
As reported by the Nottingham Post, West Ham released an official statement regarding the decision: “West Ham United can confirm that men’s first-team Head Coach Nuno Espírito Santo has left his position with immediate effect.”
“Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the Club’s objectives and expectations remain on track.”
