State police: N’Assembly prepares bill for Tinubu’s assent after 28 states approve
The National Assembly has received approval from 28 state houses of assembly for the constitutional amendment to establish state police, TheCable reports.
Clerk to the National Assembly Kamoru Ogunlana disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
The approvals exceed the 24 states, or two-thirds of the 36 assemblies, required under Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution.
The bill was sent to the states on September 16, with an October 15 deadline for responses.
Ogunlana said his office would keep receiving reports until the bill is transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
“The Office has also undertaken the necessary administrative verification of the reports and accompanying Votes and Proceedings to establish their authenticity and ensure that the records accurately reflect the decisions taken by the respective State Houses of Assembly,” he said.
He said administrative processes were under way to transmit the bill, describing the move as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and deepening its federal system.
