Carrick steps in to save Cunha from UEFA sanction after red card in Roma comeback
Michael Carrick stepped in to protect Matheus Cunha from potential UEFA disciplinary action after Manchester United’s 3-2 Champions League comeback win against Roma, according to a report by Sportbible.
Cunha scored twice to spark United’s comeback before receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time. Following the final whistle, the Brazilian attempted to join his teammates on the pitch, but Carrick ushered him back to the dressing room.
Under IFAB and UEFA regulations, sent-off players must remain outside the field of play and technical area, even after full-time. Carrick’s intervention prevented Cunha from violating these protocols.
Reflecting on the match, Carrick praised his squad’s resolve: “I didn’t feel relief… I was genuinely pleased for the players. I know how much they care, I know what they’re giving.”
Despite his dismissal, Cunha expressed his delight on CBS Sports: “What a magic day. Of course, apart from the red card. But yeah, everything that you can bring for this club…”
