Democrats Sweep Congress: El-Sayed wins in Michigan as party projected to control both chambers
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has been projected to win Michigan’s Senate race over Republican Mike Rogers, as Democrats are also projected to control both chambers of Congress.
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won the Michigan Senate election, defeating Republican Mike Rogers, the Daily Post Decision Desk projected.
The result is a major win for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing and a setback for the party establishment, which had backed Representative Haley Stevens in the primary. El-Sayed overcame controversies over alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood, his comments on Israel, concerns among Jewish voters in Michigan, and criticism from fellow Democrats over his association with political streamer Hasan Piker.
Rogers, who was seeking election for the second time, struggled against a difficult environment for Republicans, including concerns over the cost of living, President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada and the Iran war, despite his efforts to distance himself and the administration from the controversies.
El-Sayed’s win adds to Democratic gains in the Senate, where the party has secured control of the chamber. Democrats have also been projected to take the House of Representatives, giving them control of both chambers of Congress.
