I drove taxi in US to pay my school fees — Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has recounted how he drove taxis and worked several jobs to finance his education in the United States, saying the experience inspired his administration’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities in Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu has revealed how he worked as a taxi driver and took other jobs in the United States to finance his education.
In a statement on Wednesday, according to Tribune, Tinubu recalled postponing his studies for several months to save money before enrolling.
“When I first arrived in the United States as a young man, I drove a taxi to earn money for my education. I even had to postpone starting school for several months to save enough.
“When I eventually got to Chicago, I worked different jobs to support myself and pay my way through university. I know what it means to worry about tuition, accommodation and how to make ends meet while pursuing an education.
“Those experiences have stayed with me,” he said.
The President cited ₦372 billion in student loans and 38 rehabilitated technical colleges as achievements of his administration.
The Federal Ministry of Education outlines these reforms under its Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
