Trump “willing to accept” results as Democrats take Congress

United States President Donald Trump has said he is “absolutely willing to accept” the results of Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which his Republican Party suffered heavy losses, The Nation reports, citing the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Xinhua.

U.S. media have projected that Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The outcome means Trump will face a divided government.

The midterm elections, held halfway through a president’s four-year term, decide all 435 seats in the House and about a third of the Senate.

Trump, according to local media reports, blamed the Republicans’ defeat on the fact that he was not on the ballot.

He also acknowledged that the war in Iran played a role in the party’s losses at the polls.

Despite the setback, the president said he was willing to work with Democrats, who will now control both chambers of Congress.

However, Trump said he was prepared to veto Democratic legislation if necessary.
