Yaya Touré’s Slovan Bratislava set unwanted Champions League record after 14th straight defeat
Yaya Touré’s difficult first season as a Champions League manager has taken another disappointing turn after Slovan Bratislava set an unwanted competition record with their 4-0 defeat to LASK.
According to ESPN, Tuesday’s loss in Austria marked Slovan’s 14th consecutive defeat in the Champions League’s main competition phase, surpassing Marseille’s previous record of 13 defeats between 2012 and 2020.
The Slovak champions now stand just two losses away from equalling the all-time European Cup record of 16 consecutive defeats, set by Luxembourg side Jeunesse Esch.
“It’s very difficult, to be honest,” Touré said after the defeat. “They were more aggressive, maybe we didn’t fight enough, but sometimes you have to just respect it.”
Slovan’s remaining fixtures against Real Betis and Shakhtar Donetsk offer opportunities to avoid matching that unwanted milestone.
Their domestic campaign is also struggling, with Touré’s side trailing Slovakian league leaders FC Dac by eight points. Touré blamed fixture congestion and accumulated fatigue for his team’s struggles.
