Vincent Kompany’s health scare exposes football’s dangerous obsession with grind culture
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany’s recent health scare has reignited concerns about football’s demanding working culture and the growing pressure on those operating within the sport.
The 40-year-old Belgian collapsed at Bayern’s training ground in October and was subsequently hospitalised with meningeal irritation. He has since been discharged, although the German champions have yet to establish a timeframe for his return.
According to a report by The Athletic, Kompany’s experience reflects a wider problem within football, where excessive workloads and limited recovery time are increasingly treated as signs of dedication.
The report highlighted similar experiences involving former managers Ralf Rangnick and Pep Guardiola, alongside concerns from players, analysts and sporting directors.
Dan Parnell, chief executive of the Association of Sporting Directors, warned against the industry’s approach to excessive work, saying: “Grind without recovery isn’t a strategy, it’s a countdown.”
The report also highlighted growing mental health concerns, strained family relationships and the pressures created by football’s increasingly congested calendar.
