Trafford: Leaving Man City was essential for my mental wellbeing
Leeds United goalkeeper James Trafford has revealed that limited playing time at Manchester City took a significant toll on his mental wellbeing, prompting his summer move in search of regular first-team football.
The 24-year-old returned to City in July 2025 after leaving Burnley, but Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival from Paris Saint-Germain less than six weeks later pushed him down the pecking order. Trafford made only one additional Premier League start in the 35 matches following the Italian’s arrival, having initially started City’s first three league fixtures.
Speaking on BBC Sport’s Football Daily interview, he described the experience as difficult. “What a horrendous, horrendous feeling. Not playing,” said Trafford. “I had to play regularly this season for my own mental wellbeing. You just lose yourself not playing.”
Despite his frustrations, Trafford said he valued his time at City, where he won two trophies after starting both domestic cup finals. Now at Leeds, he is targeting England’s starting goalkeeper position. “It’s my aim and it’s something I’ve always dreamed of,” he said.
