AAU cancels final-year exam over ‘wild jubilation’

Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has cancelled the final-year examination of its Microbiology students over alleged “wild jubilation” after their last paper, Premium Times reports.

In a letter dated 15 October, the university said its Senate had ratified the Vice-Chancellor’s approval to cancel the MCB 414 examination. The affected students must retake it in the 2026/2027 session after paying school fees, which could delay their graduation.

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Akinteye Babatunde, criticised the decision on Facebook.

“Setting over 300 students on the path of an extra year is not acceptable,” he wrote.

Some commenters also asked why students who did not take part in the celebrations should be punished.

University spokesperson Mike Aladenika defended the sanction. He said a rule introduced about three years ago prescribes cancellation for such reckless celebrations, which had caused accidents and traffic congestion. He added that students were warned but went ahead anyway.
