‘Absolutely’: Sowore vows to restore fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027
African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has declared he would restore fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027, arguing that the Tinubu administration never truly removed subsidies but simply renamed and concealed them.
Speaking on ARISE TV on Tuesday, as reported by The Punch, Sowore said “Absolutely” when asked whether he would bring back petrol subsidy, accusing the government of “quietly and secretly” subsidising the naira while denying it. “Why are you lying about subsidy then?” he asked.
Sowore also argued that Nigeria’s wealthiest citizens — not the poor — benefit most from government subsidies through customs waivers on imported goods. “All the people who bring in foreign goods and services, go and look at their waivers at customs. You will know who is getting real subsidy,” he said, insisting no country in the world fails to subsidise its poor.
