AFCON qualifiers: Taiwo Awoniyi replaces Victor Osimhen

Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up to replace injured striker Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Super Eagles confirmed Awoniyi’s inclusion on Sunday after Osimhen failed to recover from a muscle strain that has kept him sidelined.

According to Premium Times, Osimhen will miss Nigeria’s opening qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau after his recovery took longer than expected.

Nigeria host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.

Awoniyi’s recall gives head coach Eric Chelle another experienced attacking option alongside Ademola Lookman, Tolu Arokodare and Akor Adams.
