Alleged stolen property: Maina reacts to EFCC wanted notice

Former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, has demanded details of the allegation behind the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s declaration of him as wanted.

According to Tribune, Maina’s position was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by his Senior Media and Legal Assistant, Emmanuel Umahi Ekwe, following the EFCC notice over an alleged case of receiving stolen property.

His legal team said the notice did not specify the nature of the alleged stolen property, the transaction involved, the persons from whom it was allegedly received, or the date and circumstances of the alleged offence.

“It would therefore be premature for us to speculate on facts that have not been made available to us,” the statement said.

Maina said he was taking steps to obtain and examine the relevant information before determining his legal response. His team also urged the media and public to exercise restraint, stressing that an allegation in a law-enforcement notice should not be treated as a final determination of criminal liability.

The statement said further clarification would be provided after the necessary information is obtained.
