APC: Atiku “unfit for presidency” over Mambilla scandal revelations

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has described African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar as “unfit for Nigeria’s presidency” over revelations from the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project arbitration dispute, Vanguard reports.

In a statement signed by spokesman Dele Alake on Friday, the council alleged that Atiku and former Power Minister Olu Agunloye “worked in cahoots” to secure the Mambilla contract for Sunrise Power despite objections from ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, further accusing Atiku of receiving a $500,000 payment through Sunrise promoter Leno Adesanya to his then-wife, Jennifer Douglas.

The claims followed an International Chamber of Commerce tribunal ruling that rejected Sunrise’s over $3 billion in claims against Nigeria, though Adesanya had told the tribunal the payment was actually part of a forex transaction carried out for Atiku.

The council also contrasted Atiku’s absence from tribunal testimony with appearances by Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, citing this alongside Obasanjo’s memoir criticisms as grounds to demand Atiku’s withdrawal from the 2027 race — a call that now injects fresh volatility into the early stages of the presidential contest.
