As world leaders meet at UN, Iran steps up execution of political prisoners

Iranian activist and former political prisoner, Sheila Neinavaie, has raised the alarm over a fresh wave of politically motivated executions in Iran, revealing that at least 40 political prisoners have been hanged since mid-March, with over 100 more facing death sentences, according to a report by RealClearWorld.

Neinavaie, who was arrested as a teenager for supporting Iran’s pro-democracy opposition and now lives in exile in California, said many of those executed had participated in the country’s recent nationwide uprising or were affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

She said she would join thousands of Iranians for a rally outside the UN General Assembly in New York on September 22, spotlighting NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi’s ten-point plan for a democratic Iran, which calls for free elections, separation of religion and state, and gender equality.

Neinavaie argued the executions reflect the regime’s fear of another uprising rather than its strength, urging the international community to hold Iran’s leaders accountable while insisting change must come from Iranians themselves.
