Atiku raises alarm over coastal highway rerouting, possible $20bn loan
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has questioned the Federal Government’s decision to reroute sections of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway amid reports of a proposed $20 billion loan.
According to Daily Post, Atiku raised the concerns on Monday, October 12, 2026, following Works Minister David Umahi’s announcement that President Bola Tinubu approved routing sections through the existing East-West Road.
Atiku demanded publication of the project’s original studies, revised designs, contracts and payment records.
“When the route changes, the price must be opened. When the work changes, the payments must be explained,” he said.
The African Democratic Congress presidential candidate also challenged the administration to clarify reports of additional borrowing.
“Is a US$20 billion request being prepared for the National Assembly? Is any part of that money meant for Hitech?” he asked.
Atiku insisted that Nigerians deserved transparency regarding project costs, contractual changes and public borrowing.
The reported loan proposal remains unconfirmed.
