BBC Pundits back Arsenal to retain Premier League title as Man City lead rivals
Arsenal have been overwhelmingly backed to retain their Premier League title after the BBC asked 26 of its television and radio pundits to predict the top four for the 2026-27 campaign.
According to BBC Sport, 25 of the 28 predictions selected Arsenal to finish first, with none placing Mikel Arteta’s side below second. The Gunners ended a 22-year wait for the league title last season and have strengthened further during the summer, adding Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis while pursuing defender Ezri Konsa.
Manchester City emerged as Arsenal’s clearest challenger, although only three pundits selected Enzo Maresca’s side to win the title. City are entering a new era following Pep Guardiola’s departure and have also undergone significant squad changes.
Liverpool received 38 points in the BBC’s weighted ranking, putting them third, while Chelsea followed with 35. Manchester United were fifth with 21 points, although several pundits believe Michael Carrick’s side can challenge for Champions League qualification. Aston Villa and Tottenham were the other clubs to receive top-four selections.
Arsenal’s advantage was largely attributed to continuity, squad depth and the confidence gained from winning the championship. Their 3-0 Community Shield victory over City has further strengthened their credentials before the opening weekend.
Liverpool are viewed as a work in progress under new manager Andoni Iraola, despite strong attacking options and the arrival of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Chelsea have attracted attention because of their attacking talent and lack of European football, which could allow Xabi Alonso greater time on the training ground.
United, meanwhile, have been backed by some pundits to return to the Champions League places after finishing third last season. The BBC also highlighted Ipswich Town as a potential surprise package among the promoted clubs, with Gary O’Neil’s side praised for their summer recruitment and athletic profile.
The predictions were made with squads as they stood on August 20, meaning the final outcome could still change significantly before the transfer window closes on September 1.
