Brake failure blamed as 20 die in Plateau road crash
At least 20 people were killed and several others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash at Hawan Kibo in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Friday.
According to Vanguard, the accident occurred at about 5pm and involved a truck and other vehicles, leaving several victims trapped as residents and motorists rushed to assist.
Plateau State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, confirmed the incident and attributed the crash to brake failure.
“The crash was caused by brake failure.” he said.
Ogungbemi said FRSC personnel evacuated many injured victims from the scene and transported them to hospitals for treatment.
He urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly checked and maintained before embarking on journeys, particularly their braking systems and other critical components.
The sector commander expressed concern over the fatalities and injuries, advising drivers to exercise caution and promptly repair mechanical faults before travelling on highways across Nigeria to prevent avoidable road crashes.
