British man returns home after 28-year walk around the world
British adventurer Karl Bushby has returned to the United Kingdom after spending nearly 28 years travelling around the world without using conventional transport.
According to Vanguard, the 57-year-old former paratrooper stepped onto British soil on Monday after swimming across the English Channel from France.
Bushby began his 50,000-kilometre journey from Punta Arenas, Chile, in November 1998, pledging to reach his mother’s home near Hull without travelling by planes, trains, boats or vehicles.
“Feels good to have UK soil under my feet after all these years,” Bushby said.
“It hasn’t been easy, and that’s part of the point. Proving I’m more capable than I give myself credit for,” he added.
“All of us can accomplish more than we will ever imagine.”
His journey took him through 29 countries and included walking the Americas and crossing the Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia.
Bushby was welcomed at Shakespeare Beach near Dover by family and friends. Filmmaker Werner Herzog and his crew, who are producing a documentary titled Walk of Life about the journey, were also present.
