CAN breaks silence on conviction of woman who embraced Christianity in Borno
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over the reported conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman, Lami Samuel Dawa, in Borno State, Daily Post reports.
In a statement signed by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said it was particularly concerned by reports that the case arose from the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity. It noted, however, that the precise facts and legal basis of the conviction were still being verified.
The association said an appeal had been filed and that it would allow the judicial process to run its course.
CAN said the case raises important questions about religious freedom and the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution. It added that every individual has the right to choose or change their religion without coercion or unlawful punishment.
It said it “will continue to monitor developments in the case and engage with the relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.”
