Canada extends study permit, visitor visa processing times for Nigerians

Nigerians applying to study or visit Canada will now face longer estimated processing times following the latest update by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

According to a report by The Punch, the processing time for study permit applications submitted from Nigeria increased from nine weeks to 10 weeks as of September 16, 2026.

The estimated processing time for Canadian visitor visas also rose from 84 days to 87 days during the same period.

The figures were contained in IRCC’s latest temporary residence processing-time update, which is revised weekly.

Meanwhile, the estimated processing time for Nigerian applicants seeking work permits remained unchanged at 10 weeks.

Applicants for Canada’s Super Visa from Nigeria also experienced an increase, with the estimated processing period rising from 44 days to 46 days.

IRCC clarified that the processing times are estimates and should not be regarded as fixed deadlines or guarantees. Actual processing periods may vary depending on factors including application volumes, the complexity of individual cases and whether additional documents or checks are required.

For visitor visa applications, processing could take longer if applicants are asked to provide additional documents, attend an interview, undergo a medical examination or submit a police certificate.

The latest increase comes as Nigerians planning to travel, study or visit family in Canada are advised to account for potentially longer processing periods when making their plans.
