Canada vows to match US tariffs after last-minute talks fail
Trade talks between Canada and the United States collapsed on Friday night, reigniting the North American trade war, CNN reports.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the two countries failed to reach a deal to “meet our objectives” and suspended negotiations, directing Canada’s team to return to Ottawa.
As a result, 50% US tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect at midnight, with Carney vowing Canada would “match those tariffs dollar for dollar.”
Trump had earlier claimed a deal was reached, but US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer accused Canada of new demands that upended the agreement.
