Carragher compares Arteta to Sir Alex Ferguson after Sunderland referee row
Jamie Carragher has compared Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to Sir Alex Ferguson following his furious reaction to the controversial penalty awarded against the Gunners in their 2-0 win over Sunderland.
Speaking on Sky Sports in a report by Sports Mole, the former Liverpool defender described Arteta as the Premier League’s “modern-day” Ferguson, arguing that the Spaniard now has enough authority as the reigning champion to challenge decisions publicly.
Arteta repeatedly criticised the penalty awarded to Sunderland despite David Raya saving Enzo Le Fee’s effort, with Arsenal later seeking an explanation from refereeing chiefs. Carragher believes Arteta’s stance was calculated management designed to ensure similar decisions are not repeated.
