Carrick not the main problem at Old Trafford, says Steven Gerrard shead of Villa clash
Steven Gerrard has warned that Michael Carrick could face the sack as Manchester United head coach if they lose to Aston Villa, according to Metro.
United sit 17th in the Premier League without a domestic win since late August, despite ending a nine-game winless streak across all competitions with a mid-week Champions League victory over Roma.
“Michael is having a tough time, and I think the next league game is crucial,” Gerrard told TNT Sports.
“Everyone knows what a defeat [in] the last game before an international break could do. If you lose that on the back of not winning a nine in the league, I think it could be tough for him.”
However, Gerrard defended Carrick, insisting wider issues at Old Trafford are to blame.
”I don’t think it’s just a problem with the manager,” he added. “I think it’s a group of players that have been really inconsistent… and there’s also a lot of problems from above.”
