Chelsea injury update: Martinez, James among six players facing fitness concerns
Chelsea will be without several players for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Tottenham, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez and captain Reece James among those sidelined. According to the Evening Standard, Martinez suffered a broken jaw after colliding with Jarrad Branthwaite during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton. He has undergone surgery and is expected to be unavailable for several weeks.
The Argentine goalkeeper said on social media: “Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well. “The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we’ll be back.”James, meanwhile, has undergone surgery on a knee injury and is expected to be out for approximately three months, with January identified as his potential return period.
Pep Chavarria’s availability remains uncertain after a training-ground injury, while Malo Gusto is expected to return after illness. Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha are also recovering from injuries, with both potentially returning in November. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will hope to have his squad strengthened as the Blues seek greater consistency this season.
