Cody Gakpo hails Anfield atmosphere after Liverpool edge Chelsea on penalties

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has credited the Anfield crowd for inspiring the Reds to a 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool progressed to the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw in normal time, with Gakpo scoring from the penalty spot before converting again in the shoot-out.

Asked about the impact of the home support, the Netherlands international said: “It is. Everybody in the stands knows this as well, and when we have a little bit of momentum or we have a good moment then they get behind us with everything they have got.”

He added: “I have to say it gives us energy which nobody thought they had. But it’s very helpful and obviously we are very appreciative of that and we always try to give (something back).”

Joe Gomez scored the decisive penalty, sending Liverpool into a quarter-final meeting with Bournemouth. Gakpo also expressed hope that the competition could provide silverware and boost Liverpool’s season.
