Democrats demand DOJ halt Ilhan Omar investigation days before election
More than 170 House Democrats are demanding that the Department of Justice drop its investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar’s immigration history, Breitbart reports.
In a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, the Democrats, led by Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal, described the raid on Omar’s Washington, DC residence as “weaponization” of federal law enforcement. “This weaponization of law enforcement to harass a sitting Member of Congress 22 days before an election is unprecedented and unacceptable,” the letter read, noting Omar faces reelection in Minnesota’s 5th district within a week.
The lawmakers said the probe concerns Omar’s late father’s immigration paperwork filed after she fled Somalia’s civil war at age eight, arguing it does not justify a “pre-dawn raid” over documents filed when she was a minor. They noted a similar investigation during Trump’s first term in 2019 found “insufficient evidence of wrongdoing.” The letter also pointed to Vice President JD Vance’s March comments asserting Omar “definitely committed immigration fraud” before any investigation concluded.
Jayapal told The New Republic Democrats would “actively and aggressively investigate” the matter if they win the House majority, potentially moving to block funding for the probe.
The DOJ and DHS are investigating allegations that Omar married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, to help him secure US immigration status. Investigators reportedly collected DNA and 17 items during last week’s raid, and Omar is also facing a separate inquiry into her finances.
