Democrats win control of the House, Decision Desk HQ projects
Democrats won control of the U.S. House on Tuesday, Decision Desk HQ projects, giving them subpoena power to investigate President Trump and putting Hakeem Jeffries in line to become the first Black Speaker.
Democrats won control of the U.S. House on Tuesday, The Hill reports, citing a Decision Desk HQ projection, ending four years in the minority and setting up divided government.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., expected to be the next Speaker, has said investigations of President Trump and his inner circle will begin immediately. “Our promise to the country in the new Congress is that, beginning on Day 1, we’re going to hold the crooks accountable,” Jeffries said before the elections.
Democrats plan probes of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, violence tied to Trump’s deportation surge and the president’s finances, with new powers to issue subpoenas and set hearings. They also plan bills to lower consumer costs, including restoring ObamaCare subsidies that expired in January. Those bills are not expected to become law because Trump holds the veto pen.
Jeffries is in line to become the first Black Speaker, with a House vote set for Jan. 3.
