DHS Secretary says Congresswoman Ilhan Omar did marry her brother…could face deportation
Trump’s top immigration official claims an internal investigation found that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar “married her brother” and could be facing deportation.
According to the Daily Mail, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said of the Minnesota Democrat: “We know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States. We know he lives now in London.” He was referring to Ahmed Elmi, the second man Omar married; both are originally from Somalia. Omar allegedly was still married to her first husband, Ahmed Hirsi, at the time.
Mullin told conservative commentator Benny Johnson that Omar’s actions amounted to “possible illegal activity” and that the investigation is “ongoing,” breaking with the standard practice of officials not discussing active investigations. He said there was “no expiration” on potential charges, adding that if authorities could prove wrongdoing, Omar could be deported.
Omar has long denied the allegations and has since remarried a third time, to political consultant Tim Mynett. Her office did not immediately respond to the Daily Mail’s request for comment.
A past friend of Omar’s, Abdihakim Osman, told the outlet in 2020 that Omar had said she wanted to help her brother obtain papers to stay in the US.
Mullin insisted the investigation is apolitical, despite Omar being a longtime target of President Trump. A DHS spokesperson declined to confirm or deny Mullin’s claims, saying the department does not comment on ongoing investigations, but added that “no one, including members of Congress, are above the law.”
