Diphtheria scare: Lagos records 53 suspected cases, six confirmed
Lagos State Government has assured residents that there is no widespread diphtheria outbreak in the state, despite 53 suspected cases and six confirmed infections recorded in 2026.
According to P.M. News Nigeria, Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said the state had intensified surveillance, testing and contact tracing.
Abayomi urged residents to remain vigilant and seek medical attention for symptoms including fever, severe sore throat and breathing difficulties. He also urged parents to ensure children complete their three-dose pentavalent vaccination. The commissioner said all confirmed cases had been managed, while contacts were traced and monitored.
